So You Want an Agent

YOU'RE READY, your MS is perfect(!), and the timing is right. Yet nobody is banging down your door. What about an agent?

GETTING AN AGENT, I have sometimes heard, is as hard as getting a publisher. Not quite, but the trick is the same — getting someone to believe in your book as much as you do.

IT HELPS TO HAVE some friends in the business, but that's no guarantee. If you don't have any connections, I recommend LMP, the Literary Market Place, for a starting place. It has a section just for agents. Find one that's dealing with properties similar to yours. As usual, it's a matter of making connections with people who share your interests or passions. It may take years to find them.

IF FOR SOME REASON this tactic isn't working, and you still believe strongly in your work, strongly enough to invest in it yourself, consider self-publishing. Some major authors have done it, for better control over their own materials. Some people call it vanity publishing, which simply means that you have faith in it.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

No agent wants to see a book until he or she has decided whether to pursue the relationship.
