Critique

Do I Need a Critique?

A CRITIQUE SERVES as an opportunity to evaluate your options. Is your manuscript ready to send out to publishers? The answer, ultimately, is Yes … or No. Manuscripts from even the best writers will be scrutinized by more than one editor in a publishing house.

WHAT ABOUT ALL THE TIME invested in writing a whole book? Doesn't that count for something? Indeed it does. Everyone may have a "book" in them, but you're a rare person who actually made the sustained effort to make it happen. Be proud of that. That next step — getting published — may take as long as it did to finish your manuscript, and it may not happen at all. The acceptance rate at regular publishers is about 3 percent. So think seriously about whether you want to pursue this track. That's the point of a critique, to help you make that decision.

A CRITIQUE IS neither positive nor negative; I will write my comments and my recommendation. How you proceed from there is your business.

MY READING RATE IS $35 per hour. For a 200-page manuscript, figure about $300. You will receive a written critique of your manuscript, concentrating on weak spots, together with my recommendation as to what to do next.

SEND MANUSCRIPT (a copy, not the original) along with an initial payment of $150 by check to:
